Applied Research
Research Technician
Part-time term position available
Works under the general supervision of the Applied Research Manager. Performs routine collection and analyses of seawater as related to water quality monitoring, life support system evaluation and experimentation. Performs a wide variety of activities in support of the water quality effort, including: basic bacteriological testing of water; maintaining computer databases; submitting routine data summaries; maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies. Assists with routine calibration and maintenance of portable and remote water quality sensors. Assists with maintenance of Applied Research chemical inventory, including chemical inventory database and Material Safety Data Sheet files. Works closely with and assists Applied Research, Husbandry, Facilities and other MBA staff with water quality monitoring and other laboratory and research tasks. Position will end on 12/31/2008.
Performs routine collection and analyses of seawater as related to water quality, life support system monitoring and experimentation. Analyses to include bacteriological, physical, inorganic and organic constituents of seawater using a variety of portable instrumentation, chemical methodologies, laboratory equipment and procedures.
Assists with microbiological analyses, including coli form and enterococcus bacteria in water, and air-spore fungi in MBA exhibits and visitor areas.
Assists with routine calibration and maintenance of portable and remote water quality sensors (e.g., pH, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential). Updates sensor maintenance database.
Uses computers to interface instrumentation and for data logging, data reduction, and report preparation.
Maintains computer databases of water quality results obtained from individual exhibits or projects.

Center for Future of the Oceans
Senior Science Manager

The Senior Science Manager is a full-time, salaried position within the Sustainable Seafood Initiative at Monterey Bay Aquarium's Center for the Future of the Oceans. The incumbent is responsible for the overall scientific approach of the SSI through the development and implementation of the program's scientific framework for sustainable capture fisheries and aquaculture. The position oversees the scientific analysis and decision-making process for consumers and major seafood buyers, manages the program's Fishery and Aquaculture Managers, collaborates with external colleagues on a diversity of sustainability issues, and acts as a primary spokesperson for SSI and CFFO on the science and policy of sustainable seafood.
Develop and continually refine the scientific and policy frameworks for sustainable capture fisheries and aquaculture implemented by the Sustainable Seafood Initiative and the Center for the Future of the Oceans.
Direct all aspects of the scientific analysis and decision-making process for consumers and major seafood buyers.
Ensure that all Seafood Reports and other sourcing materials meet the program's format and standards, are scientifically accurate and complete, and are externally reviewed, copyedited and posted to the website in a timely manner.

Ocean Policy Research Analyst

Researches and analyzes current and emerging ocean conservation policy issues. Supports the CFFO policy program by helping develop and implement ocean conservation policy priorities for the aquarium. Conduct research and analysis on current and emerging ocean conservation policy issues identified through the CFFO strategic planning process, or as assigned. Produce reports and briefing papers that present issues in concise form and outline recommended actions. Work with CFFO staff and partners to recommend and implement policy priorities for the aquarium. Conduct research and analysis on online advocacy initiatives related to ocean policy issues. Works with CFFO staff and consultants to develop policy priorities for the aquarium’s online advocacy program. Work with CFFO staff and other aquarium staff to develop and update policy-related content in the “Take Action” exhibit and future conservation-related exhibits and programs. Maintain up-to-date familiarity with a wide range of ocean policy issues relevant to the CFFO strategic plan and online advocacy program. Supports CFFO outreach efforts by identifying opportunities for increased public involvement in policy processes at all levels, and developing and communicating relevant outreach materials. Participate in training sessions for aquarium members, volunteers, and staff, together with community members, to help them engage in key policy processes.Draft talking points and other policy documents for CFFO and aquarium senior staff. Masters degree in marine ecology, environmental policy, environmental science, or equivalent experience is required.
Thorough understanding of current and emerging issues in marine conservation is critical. Demonstrated ability to conduct policy research is necessary. Familiarity with online advocacy, including outreach to social networks and blogs, is highly desirable. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Communications
Graphic Designer

The candidate must be skilled in both print and web design and production. Under the direction of the art director, the graphic designer will support the creative direction and implementation of the aquarium’s print and web brand in a creative and supportive studio environment.
The position requires an excellent knowledge of print communications and the ability to create design solutions consistently and efficiently that meet the organization’s high standards. Strong typography skills and print production knowledge are a must. Organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are key to this position. Proficiency in Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, MS Word and related software is required (Mac platform) as well as hand coding HTML. Demonstrated project management experience is preferred.

Development Manager: Donor Relations

The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for all aspects of the Aquarium’s personal cultivation program for annual donors giving $2,500 and above and for Ocean Legacy planned giving donors. The Major Gifts Officer focuses on identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors for the purpose of increasing retention, gift amounts and gift frequency. The Major Gifts Officer prepares and implements plans and materials; and participates in all facets of the Aquarium’s fundraising activities.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has 75,000 member households including over 3,000 annual donors and operates a multifaceted fundraising program including online, telemarketing and direct mail giving opportunities. Annual fundraising goals are $20 million dollars to support new exhibits, education, research, ocean policy initiatives and to build the endowment fund.
Exhibit Production
Production Designer/CAD Drafter
Full-time position available
This position works with the senior exhibit designers, project managers and outside consultants to produce accurate exhibit documentation on tight deadlines. Interprets Senior designer’s sketches to create detailed custom cabinetry drawings that integrate electronic, A/V, lighting, and mechanical components, as well as standard interior design details that include electrical, lighting, plumbing and HVAC. Creates design details in AutoCAD of exhibit construction and fabrication projects. Maintains records of all specifications and correspondence. Researches materials and techniques for specialty fabrications required in exhibits. Assists in building models and prototypes.
Works with lead designer and CAD/Construction Coordinator to understand exhibit drawing requirements for each unique project.
Creates custom cabinetry and exhibit details, following Senior Designer’s sketches, incorporating specialty hardware and equipment specs from other’s, in AutoCAD.
Researches hardware and specialty materials as needed.
Creates custom interior design details, including structural, mechanical, plumbing, A/V and lighting elements, in AutoCAD.
Makes accurate field measurements, and notes details of existing building conditions.

Exhibit Research and Development
Administrative Coordinator - Exhibitions Division

This position provides administrative support to the Vice President of Exhibitions, Project Director (s) and Exhibitions Division Managers. S/he assists with the preparation and input of annual budget projections; creates and maintains databases and spreadsheets for tracking/administering departmental budgets, monthly and year-end financial reports; coordinating exhibit project contracts and monitors contract scheduled payments. Administrative tasks as requested. This position must be self directed and able to perform under deadline pressure.
Provides administrative support to the Vice President of Exhibitions, Project Director (s) and Exhibitions Division Managers. Including but not limited to photocopying, faxing, correspondence, mailings and mail distribution.
Prepares accurate and timely financial reports for seven Exhibitions Division departments and additional financial/tracking reports for special projects as assigned.
Assists Vice President of Exhibitions, Project Director (s) and Exhibitions Division Managers by tracking expenses to comply with projected budgets allocations.
Submits and tracks purchase orders, contracts, payment schedule and expense reports.
Responsible for preparing and tracking all Outside Vendor contracts for the Exhibitions Division departments and all Outside Vendor contracts relating to temporary exhibits. This includes obtaining Outside Vendor Insurance documentation as required per the MBA contracts.
Director of Exhibitions

The Director of Exhibitions is an expert in all aspects of creating interpretive exhibitions. The Director's role is to provide leadership and creative vision during the planning, development, design, production, installation, evaluation and remedial adjustment phases for all permanent and temporary aquarium exhibitions and related programs. The Director of Exhibitions maintains a creative and supportive atmosphere in the workplace while playing an active role overseeing the organization of exhibition content, the creation of the interpretive messages and the invention of overarching intellectual frameworks, themes, designs and treatments. The Director of Exhibitions works with the Vice President of Exhibitions, aquarium senior staff, representatives from other departments and exhibition department staff members to establish an exhibition's topic, budget, goals, schedules and deadline and is responsible for maintaining the highest standards for the development, design and production of innovative exhibitions that adhere to budgets and schedules and meet or exceed their goals.
This position requires supervisory experience, with an emphasis on managing creative production, productivity and quality control. This position also requires well-developed communication skills and feedback skills in order to establish and maintain strong relationships with a wide variety of staff as well as outside consultants and contractors. Degree in museum studies, design, or a related field; advanced degree preferred. Proven expertise in current exhibition practices and strategies. (Advanced knowledge of exhibition development, design and audience evaluation and a basic understanding of exhibition construction and fabrication.) Proven ability to develop small-scale and large-scale exhibitions under deadline pressure. Minimum of five years experience leading the creation of large-scale exhibitions. Proven ability to manage a large creative staff with diverse responsibilities under constant deadline pressures. Assistant Exhibit Developer

The Assistant Exhibit Developer is responsible for assisting with planning and implementing the aquarium's interpretive program through the medium of exhibits. He/she assists in developing new temporary and permanent interpretive exhibits. He/she will also serve as an audience and program advocate. The Assistant Exhibit Developer will also develop exhibit-related materials, including research, planning, writing and editing exhibit labels, articles, visitor handouts, audio-visual scripts, exhibit-specific public program scripts and other interpretive materials. He/she will solicit input from and disseminate exhibit-related information to members, volunteers, staff and others on request.
Specific Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assist with the conceptual development, research, writing and editing for exhibits and exhibit-related materials.
Participate in all evaluation phases.
Serve as an information resource to all divisions.
Assist the Senior Exhibit Developer with planning and implementing the exhibit's interpretive program through labels and other interpretive content.

Responsible for the administration of activities within the Custodial Department of the Facilities Division. Coordinates activities associated with the maintenance and cleanliness of the Aquarium campus. This includes the Aquarium's interior and exterior exhibit areas, restrooms, conference rooms, auditorium, glass and acrylics. This also includes the maintenance and cleanliness of office spaces at the Education Building, 807 Building, Coast House and Training Center, 160 Central, Geyer Building, Pink Building and Sloat Facilities. Responsible for integrated pest management, landscape maintenance, waste management and recycling program.
Interviews, evaluates and oversees supervisory personnel within the department.Regularly oversees pest control, animal damage management, landscaping, filtered drinking water service and recycling.Inventories, tracks and orders custodial supplies and equipment, maintains MSDS binders on all products and maintains custodial equipment. Maintains computer time card system and attendance controller administering and employee recognition program for attendance or performance. Maintains area cleaning program and schedules to include daily inspections. Maintains standard operating procedures manual and establishes performance standards. Oversees the scheduling and setting up instructions for meetings and night events set up requests. Responsible for establishing and maintaining the annual budget for the department. Continually researches new earth friendly cleaning supplies and paper products.

Controller

The Controller is responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of the accounting department. Includes management of the general ledger and creation of financial reports and tax information. Manages annual audit. Oversees compliance with federal grant requirements and other restricted funds. Responsible for ongoing enhancement and monitoring of documented system of internal controls.
BA/BS in accounting required. Licensed CPA strongly preferred. Required to have minimum of 3 years experience as controller in a not-for-profit environment or equivalent experience, minimum of 8 years experience in an accounting environment, and minimum of 3 years supervisory and management experience. Excellent supervisory skills required. Experience with implementing and maintaining an accounting system with multiple restricted funds. Financial Analyst

Responsible for the analysis of complex financial data and the creation of monthly reports to support effective management and decision-making across the organization. Conducts studies to improve the operational and financial effectiveness of the organization. Extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems. Performs moderately complex statistical, cost and financial analysis of financial reports and data and prepares subsequent narrative analysis for management. The position will provide financial analysis support to the Assistant Controller.

Guest Experience Representative

The Guest Experience Representative is responsible for greeting and assisting all visitors to the aquarium by performing the specific duties of Entrance Host/Hostess, Cashier, or Group Greeter as needed. The Guest Services Representative also assists with line and crowd control and performs the duties of an Auditorium Host/Hostess as scheduled and may be required to learn and perform other duties within the position class as directed by the supervisor.
Must have effective written and oral communication skills; basic counting skills and excellent customer service skills.
Receptionist

The Receptionist is responsible for welcoming and responding to the needs of guests who call the aquarium switchboard or who come to the main reception area. The Receptionist provides administrative support to various programs, committees and promotions. The Receptionist works closely with the Guest Experience Information Coordinator and Supervisors and reports directly to the Guest Experience Greet Center Manager. The incumbent will enthusiastically direct all English and Spanish-speaking guests, vendors and media calling the main Aquarium switchboard to the appropriate staff in a timely, professional manner. Respond to radio calls from Guest Experience staff and direct appropriately. Greet and assist all English and Spanish-speaking guests, vendors, media and VIPs in the Reception area: directing people to various appointments and meetings, distributing and collecting employment applications, sharing information about upcoming promotions and membership, and directing various other requests to the appropriate people. Maintain the Visitor Comment program by compiling and distributing all visitor comments, tracking staff responses, maintaining the standard response file and producing monthly and annual reports. Compose email and letter responses from outline notes, verbal instruction and/or independently from knowledge of policy, programs and promotions. Type, edit and distribute agendas and minutes from various department meetings. Type confidential documents such as disciplinary items, as well as various handbooks, manuals and procedure guidelines. Assist with promotion preparations such as mailings and tickets. Perform other guest greeting and clerical duties as needed.
Bilingual/Spanish proficiency highly preferred.

Husbandry
Assistant Aquarist (3 Month Seasonal Assignment)

The Assistant Aquarist will assist all levels of Husbandry Operations staff with the cleaning and maintenance of exhibit and holding tanks, diet preparation and feeding, collecting for organisms and other husbandry tasks as needed. Must have previous experience with the care and maintenance of aquariums. Inclination toward the study and understanding of aquarium biology and systems. Must be able to work 40 hours per week.
Aviculturist

An Aviculturist is responsible for performing all aspects of avian husbandry without direct supervision. These duties include: maintenance of avian exhibits and holding areas, diet preparation and feeding, avian medical treatments, participation in public feeding programs, recordkeeping, training and supervision of volunteers, and avian rehabilitation.
Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology or related field.
Will have a minimum of two-years experience in public Aquarium or Zoo working with birds or comparable avian rehabilitation experience; Experience with avian medical care; Working knowledge of basic avian anatomy and husbandry; Ability to work in a team environment and communicate with diverse groups of MBA employees and volunteers; Valid California drivers’ license with an insurable driving record and basic computer skills, proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Assistant Dive Officer

The Assistant Dive Officer is a seasonal support position with a maximum term of six months. Responsibilities will include supporting the Dive Safety Office through the enforcement of dive office policies, maintenance of equipment, shared oversight of dive operations and in water activities as needed. Responsible for enforcing policies and procedures that ensure safety for staff and visitors.
Evaluate and monitor all diving activities to ensure compliance with the Aquarium's Diving Safety Manual. Required to stop any diving practice deemed unsafe as descibed in the MBA Diving Safety Manual. Responsible for assisting Dive Office with administration of the program, maintaining databases and inventories and producing program reports and evaluations. Assist Dive Office with routine gear maintenance. Assist Dive Office in training and supervision of staff and volunteer divers. Maintain current certifications to qualify as an MBA Scientific Diver. Perform other Dive Office functions such as filling cylinders, tending/diving feeding presentations, data entry, buddy diving, diving supervisor, volunteer supervisor, etc. as needed. Assist with training for all staff and volunteer divers in CPR/First Aid, O2 administration, Dive Rescue and specialized training. Event Ambassador

The Event Host/Hostess works closely with the Event Coordinator in monitoring admissions, greeting and interacting with guests during special evening events at the aquarium such as private and corporate gatherings. This is an on-call position.

Reservation Specialist

The Reservation Specialist is responsible for the following reservations: general group, tour operator, education, Aquarium Adventures, special events, guided tours and prepaid/advance ticket sales for individuals, hotels, corporate and AAA clients. The Reservation Specialist receives and processes all phone, mail, email and fax orders, and provides administrative support to the Sales, Education and Visitor Programs departments. The Reservation Center Specialist must be self-directed, capable of working independently and be able to work with clients to assist them with their visit to the aquarium.
Advise clients on planning trip to the aquarium. Perform receptionist duties for 160 Central building. Receive and process all phone, email, mail and fax orders for advance ticket requests.
Process all prepaid ticket orders for hotel, AAA and corporate clients. Responsible for processing all Aquarium Adventure orders.
Coordinate guided tour requests. Process lunch program requests, scheduling and payments. Update constituent records. Interface with Guest Experience team, Education staff, Guest Ambassadors and Visitor Program department. Coordinate teacher pre-visit monthly packets. Responsible for group/education reservation coordination with Reservation Center Manager. Process all web-based and phone-in school field trips reservations and inquiries. Mail field trip confirmation information to all teachers and group leaders, manage the school field trip waiting list, update Education Programs staff on reservation status and changes. Event Coordinator

The Event Coordinator is directly responsible for the sales, service and execution of events and evening group admissions; also acts as key coordinator for member events and other selected aquarium related events.
Act as Manager on Duty during assigned evening and/or week-end events for duration of each event. Meet the events attendance and revenue goals set forth in the annual marketing plan. Execute booked events for contract,deposit and Event Order (including menu selection), and finalize preparations. Build prospective client base and develop industry contacts through site inspections and coverage of sales telephone. Prepare event schedules and process billing for events. Professionally represent the aquarium to prospective clients as an educational and entertaining event facility. Initiate effective follow-up on potential clients and past customers. Keep abreast of trends in the association, corporate and incentive markets as they affect the Monterey Peninsula and Monterey Bay Aquarium. Security
Security Officer

The Security officer will provide a safe environment for MBA property, employees, volunteers and visitors. Conduct daily patrols of all MBA buildings, grounds and parking lots to ensure all entry points are operational and secure. Immediately report all deficiencies to the Security supervisor and Safety manager. Shifts will vary according to needs. This position ends on 9/15/2008.
Must have written and oral communication skills in English.

Underwater Explorers Program Instructor
Seasonal position available
The Underwater Explorers Program Instructor will be responsible for delivering Underwater Explorers programs to the public on our outside deck and in the Great Tide Pool. They are the primary response for water safety and rescue of participants while teaching children ages 8-13 about the natural history of our tide pools and ocean. They will introduce participants to the use of specialized SCUBA gear; lead them on surface dives in the Great Tide Pool and serve as in-water interpreter of its habitats and animals. They are also responsible for daily support for Husbandry maintenance of the Great Tide Pool exhibit, as well as minor repair of selected Underwater Explorers equipment. Dates of employment 5/31/2008-9/5/2008
Must meet the following criteria:
Must have nationally recognized Open Water certification with 20 cold-water dives; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Effective interpersonal skills for dealing with staff, visitors and children; Basic knowledge of the local marine species and environments; In water supervisory skills; Ability to effectively deliver educational material; Must have own cold-water skin diving equipment (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, booties). Underwater Explorers Program Assistant Supervisor

The Underwater Explorer (UE) Assistant Supervisor will be responsible for acting as supervisor as needed - Assistant Dive Officer and the Dive Office. They may also be required to act as the Aquarium Adventures Representative when deemed necessary. In addition, they will be required to perform all duties of the UE Instructor position.
Nationally recognized Dive master certification with at least 50 cold-water dives. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Underwater Explorers Program Team Leader
Seasonal position available
All duties of the Underwater Explorers Program Instructor. In addition:
Ensure daily logistics and duties of the program are completed.
Provide input to staff on daily logistics and procedures.
Keep the Underwater Explorers Coordinator informed on daily program operations and needs. Assist with training of Underwater Explorers Instructors. Deliver daily briefings when requested by the Underwater Explorers Coordinator. Delegate staff duties such as tide pool maintenance, laundry, repairs, etc.
Nationally recognized Open Water certification with 20 cold-water dives. At least one-season experience as an Underwater Explorers Instructor. General knowledge of MBA programs, departments and processes. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Effective interpersonal skills for dealing with staff, visitors and children. Basic knowledge of the local marine species and environments. In-Water supervisory skills. Basic computer skills (Word and Excel). Ability to effectively deliver educational material. Must have own cold-water skin diving equipment (wetsuit, mask, snorkel, fins, gloves, booties). Must be available June 4, 2008 through Sept 5, 2008.
Guest Experience Summer Actors
Seasonal position available
Actors will perform in theatrical bilingual production in outdoor amphitheater setting and will engage guests through improvisation and music on a conservation topic in the outdoor entry area of the aquarium. Actors will work with Kinan Valdez Writer and Director with Teatro Campesino. This is a Seasonal Assignment from 5/31/2008-9/2/2008.
Learn and deliver scripted performance in addition to utilize improvisational skills and music to engage guests at entry area of the aquarium. Operate technical equipment for sound and sound track for performances. Work with Guest Experience Programs staff for the maintenance of costumes and props and be able to work with large costumes. Ability to deliver limited lines in Spanish and/or sing lyrics in Spanish preferred.
